Water lilies are almost an artistic cliché, as the floating green growths have long made their way onto easels in a number that’s far disproportionate to their presence in nature. Notwithstanding this imbalance, Virginia Strom Precourt had good reason to paint them: In the spring, and especially the summer, they edged the pond that was just over a copse of trees and across a dirt driveway from her studio. Daily would she walk by the pond for 45 spring and summer seasons. At some point, she was bound to notice the water lilies, and “Shallows” captures a blooming flower in the summer of 2004.
